Talking with Dolphins and Next-Gen AI
Hello UCR tech enthusiasts, this week we’re excited to present you with opportunities you can’t miss + need to know AI updates.
Using AI to communicate with dolphins
On Apr 14, 2025, Google, in collaboration with Wild Dolphin Project (WDP), published an article explaining how, by using Gemma, an LLM made by Google, they attempted to understand the language of dolphins. Inside the system, the audio of the dolphin is tokenized and then processed by a model architecture (Gemma) that captures the meanings of the dolphin's language by outputting audio. This new system can help researchers by finding hidden structures and potential meanings within the dolphins' natural communication previously made by hand, requiring immense human effort. These new patterns can then be synthesized to form a vocabulary enabling interactive communication between humans and dolphins.

Nova Premier: Amazon’s Newest AI Model
This article discusses Amazon Nova Premier, the most advanced foundation model available through Amazon Bedrock. Nova Premier is designed to tackle complex, multistep tasks and provide a deep contextual understanding. It can handle text, images, and videos with a large language model capable of remembering 1 million tokens simultaneously, which is ideal for large codebases and documents. Amazon advertises it as a high-performance model that can be used as is and as a teacher model for creating smaller, faster variants like Nova Pro, Micro, and Lite for other uses.
Amazon emphasizes Nova Premier’s accuracy, cost-effectiveness, speed in text and visual intelligence, and its ability to handle multi-agent workflows in finance applications. High-performance, domain-specific models can be created by leveraging Bedrock Distillation and synthetic training data. Slack, Robinhood, and Snorkel AI are companies that praise the model’s performance. Nova Premier is available in select AWS regions and accessible through the Bedrock console.
